Salon 58 presents A collaboration between PICHULIK and Kristin-Lee Moolman.
Designer Katherine-Mary Pichulik created seven pairs of one-off earrings inspired by seven powerful women selected by Salon 58.
The women were Anet Pienaar Vosloo, Mellissa Muringani, Lindiwe Suttle, Juanita Daniel, Doreen de Waal, Jenna Bruwer and Jackie Burger. Each woman was given a set of questions, and the answers to these seemingly abstract questions informed Katherine’s design process. The women’s memories, aspirations and passions were woven into the pieces through symbols, and a trousseau of materials tying their lives to the jewelry.
INSPIRED BY THE CATHOLIC MOTIFS USED TO DEPICT SAINTS, KRISTIN PHOTOGRAPHED EACH OF THESE WOMEN BARE-SHOULDERED, DRAPED IN FRONT OF A BLUE SKY. VULNERABLE AND POWERFUL, THESE WOMEN ARE UNAPOLOGETICALLY AUTHENTIC – CONFRONTING THE VIEWER WITH THEIR GAZE
THE VIDEO PIECE CONTINUED WITH THE MOTIF OF RELIGIOUS ICONOGRAPHY TO MEMORIALIsE AND HONOuR THESE ICONIC WOMEN. WITH ASSISTANCE OF VIDEOGRAPHER MATT GINSBURG, EACH WOMAN WAS VIDEOED AMONGST SKY PROJECTIONS TO THE EMOTIVE GOSPEL OF THE MEDICAL MISSIONARY SISTERs.
These portraits and video installation were presented at the launch of Jackie Burgers Salon 58.
A hallmark of Pichulik’s design is her ability to bring the sacred and the meaningful to ornamentation. Photographer Kristin-Lee Moolman seeks to understand her subject with sensitivity and curiosity, preferring the idiosyncratic to the classically beautiful.
THE EARRINGS ARE AVAILABLE AT SALON 58 SIOREES AND BY ORDER.
